Max Verstappen had an amazing Formula 1 season in 2023, doing better than anyone ever has before. He won his 19th race of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is more wins in a single season than anyone else has ever had.
He also led the most laps in a season and had the biggest lead in points over the second-place driver in the championship. The week before, at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen became the first driver to win three races in one country during a single season. He had already won in Miami and Austin, so he won all the races in the United States in 2023.
In Las Vegas, he also broke a very old record by leading 29 laps and then winning the race. This meant he had led 75.06% of all laps in 2023, breaking a 60-year-old record of 71.47%. By the end of the season, after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he had increased that percentage even more.
So, in 2023, Verstappen set records for the most wins in a season, most laps led, biggest points gap, and leading the highest percentage of laps. His remarkable performance made him a favorite in 1xBet sports betting, with many fans placing bets on him to win races. Verstappen’s consistency and dominance on the track provided bettors with a reliable and exciting option throughout the season.
F1 records Verstappen has in 2023
In just the third season of Formula 1 racing, a driver named Ascari became a world champion by winning six out of eight races for Ferrari. This means he won most of the races that year, a record even famous drivers like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel couldn’t beat when they won their championships.
Then came Verstappen. In 2023, he was the best driver by far and won 19 out of 22 races. This means he won 86% of the races, which is an amazing record.
F1’s most wins in a season
Verstappen broke Ascari’s record in Sao Paulo, and he’s also breaking his own records. In 2022, Verstappen won 15 races, which was more than Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel’s record of 13 wins in one season.
But in 2023, Verstappen and his team, Red Bull, did even better. He won 19 races that season, beating his own record from 2022. He broke his own record in October at the Mexico Grand Prix.
F1’s most consecutive wins
Verstappen kept breaking records set by other Red Bull champions. Vettel had won the last nine races of the 2013 season, beating the old record of seven straight wins held by Ascari and Schumacher.
It seemed like Vettel’s record would last for a long time, but then, ten years later, Verstappen became unbeatable. He started his winning streak by winning the Miami Grand Prix in May and matched Vettel’s record by winning his rainy home race in Zandvoort three months later. Then, Verstappen won his 10th race in a row at the Italian Grand Prix. However, his winning streak ended when Carlos Sainz won in Singapore.
F1’s only driver to win three times in one country during a single season
Verstappen became the first driver to win three races in one country in a single year by winning all three races in the USA in 2023. He started with a win at the Miami Grand Prix in May, and then he won in Austin and Vegas later in the year.
This was only the third time in F1 history that a country hosted three races in one season. The USA did it in 1982 with races in Long Beach, Detroit, and Vegas, and Italy did it in 2020 with races at Monza, Mugello, and Imola during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 1982, different drivers won each of the three races in the USA. In 2020, Hamilton won at Mugello and Imola, while Pierre Gasly won at Monza.
F1’s most wins from pole in a season
The race isn’t won on Saturday (or Friday in the sprint race format), but if Verstappen starts in first place, you can pretty much guess what will happen. In 2023, every time he started in first place, he won the race.
He won 12 races this way, breaking the record of nine wins from first place set by Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Sebastian Vettel in 2011.
F1’s most consecutive wins from pole position
Verstappen has turned all 12 of his first-place starts this season into wins, and this is part of a bigger record he holds.
He has won from first place in the last 16 races he started there, going back to the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix. The last time he didn’t win from pole position was the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, which Charles Leclerc won.
Most Hat-Tricks in a Season
Of those 12 pole positions, six have been part of a hat-trick. A hat-trick happens when a driver gets pole position, wins the race, and has the fastest lap in the same weekend. Verstappen achieved six hat-tricks in 2023 (Spain, Austria, UK, Japan, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi). This breaks the previous record of five hat-tricks held by Ascari in 1952 and Schumacher in 2004.
Most Points in a Season
Since 2010, winning a race gives 25 points, so the point totals are much higher now. For example, Schumacher scored 148 points in his last championship year, a total that the top six drivers passed in the 2022 standings.
Verstappen has scored the most points in a single F1 season. He beat his own record from 2022. In 2022, he scored 454 points, beating Hamilton’s 413 points from 2019. In 2023, Verstappen scored an amazing 575 points.
Most Podiums in a Season
Verstappen also broke his own record for the most podium finishes in a season, but not from 2022. In his 2021 championship fight with Hamilton, Verstappen had 18 podiums, breaking the previous record held by Schumacher, Vettel, and Hamilton.
In 2022, Verstappen had 17 podiums, tying with the other champions. In 2023, he set a new record with 21 podiums. The only race he didn’t finish in the top three was in Singapore. Schumacher is still the only driver to finish on the podium in every race of a season (2002).
Most Consecutive Top Two Finishes
This record started at the end of the 2022 season in Abu Dhabi. Verstappen’s win at Yas Marina Circuit began a streak of 15 consecutive top-two finishes, which ended at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. This tied Schumacher’s record from 2002. Hamilton is next with 12 consecutive top-two finishes from 2014 and 2015.
Most Laps Led in a Season
Verstappen broke this record with five races (and two sprint races) left in the 2023 season. At the Qatar Grand Prix, he surpassed Vettel’s record of leading 739 laps in a season. Verstappen now holds the record with 1,003 laps led and counting.
